What's up with RollerSport.TV?
New Skills Ready to Rock 5/2/2010
Your's truely is really ready to get back behind the camera at derby bouts. Alas, the camera
remains busted. Since unemployment continues, repair or better yet replacement remains a goal.
It seems clear that my computer-related resume is of little use in Seattle.
I've recently graduated from Seattle Gaming Academy with the idea of adding some new arrows to my
still-servicable quiver. Since there are casinos in many more places than there are software
development companies I'm hopeful that if no opportunity appears in Seattle,
I can relocate somewhere that will be conducive to getting
back behind the camera.
Here is my resume. Please feel free to share it.
Community TV Bouts on ExposureRoom.com 4/23/2010
A new host interested in our TV shows has been located - ExposureRoom.com.
I'm in the process of uploading Real Deal Roller Derby on Community TV to their site.
The old, web-only videos are not of interest to ExposureRoom. They are interested in the
TV shows.
ExposureRoom is interested in high quality video. They are capable of 720p HD video,
even invite it. They even allow downloads. In an experiment, an early standard
definition episode of Real Deal Roller Derby on Community TV was uploaded to ExposureRoom.
The file length was the same as when the bout was uploaded to Viddler. I got an email
from ExposureRoom saying that given the duration of 58 minutes they expected the file size
to be about three times what it was in order to have good video quality. They recommend
the bout video be re-encoded at about three times the video bit rate! Of course that was
done.
All of our videos were shot in 1080 HD but only the editor actually saw them that way.
Both online and TV required lower quality.
Because Derby on the Rocks asked us not to make bouts available for download until April,
the videos were retained on hard drive after the standard definition television shows were
created. Since ExposureRoom allows HD videos a rework was done on one such bout as an
experiment. It is beautiful. I've have an idea of what a derby bout video should look like.
The HD versions of Derby on the Rocks bouts comes as close as I've been able to do.
Things I would like to change are: 1. more than one camera and 2. referees not hogging the
shot with their hairy backs.
Hardware is currently available which is capable of streaming 720p HD on the web using mpeg
format. Of course the receiving system needs to have a pipe capable of all those bits.
For both ends of the transmission, it is mainly a matter of money.
Viddler Responds to the Situation 12/23/09
Here is a response from Robert Sandie, President of Viddler, on the Viddler Support forum from 12/19/09

Hi ViddlerOops/rollersport.tv, thanks for vocalizing your problem and
let me walk through what's been going on internally here at Viddler.
Early when moderating commercial use on personal accounts,
we had a more agressive policy of taking down content without
notification due to the overwhelming amount of misuse we were fighting.
It's not a pretty job managing personal accounts that sign up in bulk,
uploading tens of thousands of videos by MLM, Cash Gifters and Real Estate spam.
Initially we didn't have a warning system built in, but because
of feedback like this we have changed this policy. Now we are giving
ample time to upgrade and look at alternatives before closing accounts.
Sorry that you were victim to this and will send you an email shortly
about working to restore your videos.

Note there was no mention what kind of misuse we were suspected of and sumarily punished without notification.
If I read between the lines in some threads with other users, it is possible that we were booted for copyright
violation since we have copyrighted material. Although we have yet to hear from them in this regard, we
offered them our assurances that not only are we the copyright holders but we have granted license to the
world to distribute freely within our copyright notice.
As yet we have not received a the promised email from Viddler. A notice to that affect was posted to the
Viddler Support Forum today.
Those wishing to encourage Viddler to restore the account and videos can do so by filling in the web form
at http://www.viddler.com/about/.
Viddler Looses Account and Videos (Again!!!) 12/12/09
We have been using Viddler.com to host our videos. Our account and videos there have disappeared
without notice or reason. For this reason none of the videos on RollerSport.TV are working. This happened
to us last year with Viddler. They were of no use in explaining the issue at all. We simply uploaded the
videos again to a new account and trudged ahead. Sadly, this has again happened. We are doing two things
about it:
- Trying to get Viddler to restore account and videos from their backup
- Seeking another host
For the latter issue, your suggestions will be appreciated. We are looking for a hosting service that can
handle 500MNB files of Flash 8 (or 10)videos in wide format. The flash viewer should be embeddable with sizes
customizable.
For the former item, the issue has been raised to Viddler support and since the earlier occurance was swept
under the rug, an account of the events is being tracked on the Viddler Coffee House forum. This tracking
will be mirrored here in RollerSport.TV news.
Here is the start of the thread on the Viddler Coffee House at
http://www.viddler.com/forums/general/4855 which is being posted under the username ViddlerOops:
I've been posting roller derby bouts online for over two years. My television productions have won awards.
The online versions are featured on www.RollerSport.TV
In fall of 2008 I had many videos on Viddler in the account named 'janisscenes'. One day I went to
check status and none of the videos were available on RollerSport.TV so I went to Viddler and
discovered that my account had disappeared. I could not log on. When I asked for a new password
it never arrived. When I attempted to create a new account with the same password I was told
that the email addy was already in use by another account (my disappeared one). I created a
new account so that I could access the bug report area of Viddler and get some assistance.
I was told that the account "appears to have been canceled some time ago".
Well, since I had posted a new video 2 days previously that didn't fly.
I asked that the issue be escalated so that the account and videos could be restored.
The bug was passed on. One year later I have still heard nothing about it.
So, in fall 2008 I created a new account 'janiscenes' and uploaded all of the videos again,
modifying all of the pages on www.RollerSport.TV so that the videos were again viewable. A
hassle, but the site was restored.
Yesterday I was advised by a friend that the videos on Viddler were not available.
Upon investigation I discovered that it appears an event identical to fall 2008 has taken place.
None of the videos are available on www.RollerSport.TV. I am unable to log in to the
account 'janiscenes'. When I attempt to recover the password nothing ever arrives.
If I attempt to create a new account using the same email addy I'm told that someone
is already using that password.
I'm hoping that Viddler will simply recover the account and videos, demonstrating they do
have backup capability. But this was not done last time.
Again I've posted the issue in 'Support'. Unlike last time, when
Viddler moved the issue off the publicly visible part of the forums and simply
ignored the disappearance of an account with over a hundred hours of video, this
time the developments or lack thereof will not only be posted in this thread but
in the News area of RollerSport.TV at http://rollersport.tv/News.aspx so that
anyone interested in having Viddler host their videos can follow the developments.

Initial post on Viddler Support forum: Dec. 11, 2009 21:00 pst
My account 'janiscenes' seems to have disappeared. I'm not able to log on. Why?
The videos, which are embedded on www.rollersport.tv are all marked 'no longer available'. Why?
I have not deleted this account. A video was uploaded last week. I saw an embedded video two days ago.
Is Viddler able to recover the account and videos?
This is the second time this has happened to me. Over a year ago my previous account
'janisscenes' disappeared along with all the videos. When I contacted Viddler I was
simply told that the account had been deleted "some time ago" despite the fact that
a video was uploaded 48 hours before. I asked that the issue be escalated. Nothing
further was ever heard from Viddler.
Now it has happened again. Do I need to create a new account and upload videos every year?
As it happens, Viddler has caught me at a decision node. We are just considering
other options. If Viddler indeed has lost all our files for a second time and is
unable to recover, it will certainly be considered in our decision making.
Please recover my account and videos.
